ஆப்பிரிக்கா ஆசியாவிற்கு அடுத்த உலகின் இரண்டாவது மிகப்பெரும் பரப்பளவும் மக்கள்தொகையும் கொண்ட கண்டமாகும்.இதன் 30,221,532 ச.கி.மீ (11,668,545 ச.மை)பரப்பளவு புவியின் மொத்த மேற்பரப்பில் 6%உம் மொத்த நிலப்பரப்பில் 20.4% அளவும் ஆகும்.[1] 2005 ஆம் ஆண்டு கணக்கெடுப்பின்படி 900 மிலியன் மக்களை 61 ஆட்சிப்பகுதிகளில் (53 நாடுகள்)கொண்ட இக்கண்டம் [2] புவியின் மொத்த மக்கள்தொகையில் 14% ஆகும்.இந்தக் கண்டத்தைச் சுற்றி வடக்கே நடுநிலக் கடல்,வடகிழக்கே சுயஸ் கால்வாய் மற்றும் செங்கடல், தென்கிழக்கில் இந்தியப் பெருங்கடல் மேற்கே அட்லாண்டிக் பெருங்கடல் சூழ்ந்துள்ளன.
