தொல்லியல் (Archaeology) என்பது பொருள்சார் பண்பாட்டை அகழ்ந்தெடுத்து தொன்மைக்கால மாந்தர் செயல்பாட்டைப் பகுப்பாய்வு செய்யும் அறிவியல் புலமாகும். இவ்வகைப் பொருள்சார் பண்பாட்டுத் தொல்லியல் ஆவணங்களில் கட்டிடக்கலை, தொல்பொருட்கள், தொல்லுயிர் எச்சம், மனித எச்சங்கள், சூழலியல் எச்சங்கள் ஆகியன உள்ளடங்கும். எனவே தொல்லியலை சமூகவியல் கிளைப்புலமாகவும் மாந்தவாழ்வியல் கிளைப்புலமாகவும் (humanities) கருதலாம்.[1][2] ஐரோப்பாவில் தனிப்புலமாகவும் பிறபுலங்கள் சார்ந்த கிளைப்புலமாகவும் பார்க்கப்படுகிறது; வட அமெரிக்காவில், தொல்லியல் மானிடவியலின் கிளைப்புலமாகவே நோக்கப்படுகிறது.[3]

தொல்லியலாளர்கள் கிழக்கு ஆப்பிரிகாவில் உலோம்கிவியில் கிமு 3.3 மில்லியன் ஆண்டுகள் முந்தைய கற்கருவிகளின் கண்டுபிடிப்பு முதல் மிக அண்மைய பத்தாண்டுகள் வரையிலான மாந்தரின முந்து வரலாற்றையும் வரலாற்றுக் காலத்தையும் பயில்கின்றனர்.[4]


தொல்பொருளியலின் இலக்குகள் வேறுபடுவதுடன், இதன் நோக்கங்கள், பொறுப்புக்கள் தொடர்பான வாதங்களும் இருந்துவருகின்றன. சில இலக்குகள், வரலாற்றுக்கு முந்திய மற்றும் வரலாற்றுக் கால மனிதப் பண்பாட்டின் தோற்றத்தையும், வளர்ச்சியையும் ஆவணப்படுத்தல், அவற்றை விளக்குதல்; பண்பாட்டு வரலாற்றைப் புரிந்து கொள்ளுதல்; பண்பாட்டுப் படிமுறை வளர்ச்சியைக் கால வரிசைப்படுத்தல்; மனித நடத்தைகள் பற்றி ஆய்வு செய்தல் என்பவற்றை உள்ளடக்குகின்றன.

தொல்லியலாளர்கள், தங்கள் துறையில் பயன்படுத்தப்படும் முறைகள் பற்றி ஆய்வு செய்வதிலும் கவனம் செலுத்துகின்றனர். அத்துடன், கடந்தகாலம் பற்றிய அவர்களது கேள்விகளில் தொக்கி நிற்கும் கோட்பாட்டு மற்றும் தத்துவம் சார்ந்த அடிப்படைகள் தொடர்பான ஆய்வுகளிலும் அவர்களுக்கு ஆர்வம் உண்டு. புதிய தொல்லியற் களங்களைக் கண்டுபிடித்தல், அவற்றில் அகழ்வாய்வு செய்தல், வகைப்படுத்தல், பகுப்பாய்தல் பேணிக்காத்தல் என்பனவெல்லாம், தொல்லியல் சார்ந்த வழிமுறைகளின் பல்வேறு முக்கியமான கட்டங்கள் ஆகும். இவை ஒருபுறம் இருக்கத் தொல்லியலில் பெருமளவு பல்துறைசார் ஆய்வுகளும் நடைபெறுகின்றன. இதற்காக இது, வரலாறு, கலை வரலாறு, செந்நெறி இலக்கியம், புவியியல், நிலவியல், இயற்பியல், தகவல் அறிவியல், வேதியியல், புள்ளியியல், தொல்பழங்காலச்சூழலியல், தொல்விலங்கியல், தொல்தாவரவியல் போன்ற துறைகளில் தங்கியுள்ளது.

தொல்லியலின் வரலாறு

ஃபிளவியோ பியோண்டோ என்ற இத்தாலிய வரலாற்று அறிஞர் பண்டைய உரோமின் தொல்பொருட்களைக் கொண்டு ஒரு முறையான காலக்கணிப்பு முறையை உருவாக்கினார். அதனால் இவர் தொல்லியலைக் கண்டுபிடித்தவர் என்று போற்றப்படுகிறார். சிரியேக்கோ பிசிகோலி என்ற இத்தாலிய வணிகர் கிழக்கு மத்திய கடலில் உள்ள தொல்பொருள்களைக் கொண்டு கமாண்டரியா என்ற ஆறு தொடர் புத்தகங்களை பதினான்காம் நூற்றாண்டில் எழுதினார். அதனால் இவர் தொல்லியலின் தந்தை என்று போற்றப்படுகிறார்.

இதன்பிறகு பத்தொன்பதாம் நூற்றாண்டின் பிற்பகுதியில் ஐரோப்பிய நாடுகளில் இத்துறை பெரும் வளர்ச்சி அடைந்தது. ஐரோப்பியர்கள் மறைந்து போனதாகக் கருதப்படும் ட்ராய் நிலத்தை பற்றி அறிவதற்கான முயற்சிகளும் சார்லசு டார்வினின் பரிணாமக் கொள்கையும் இத்துறை வளர்ந்ததற்கு முக்கியக் காரணிகளாக கருதப்படுகின்றன.

தொல்லியல் அகழாய்வுகளில் கிடைக்கும் பொருட்களை பல்வேறு முறைகளில் கிடைக்கும் பொருட்களின் தன்மைக்கு ஏற்ப அவற்றைக் காலக்கணிப்புக்கு உட்படுத்துகின்றனர். அவற்றை மூன்றாக வகைப்படுத்தி சார்பற்ற காலக்கணிப்பு முறைகள், சார்புடைய காலக்கணிப்பு முறைகள், சமான காலக்கணிப்பு முறைகள் அவற்றின் கீழ் பல்வேறு முறைகளை உள்ளடக்குகின்றனர்.

சார்புடைய காலக்கணிப்பு முறைகள்

சார்புடைய காலக்கணிப்பு முறைகளாக அதிகம் அறிய வருவது மண்ணடுக்காய்வாகும். இம்முறையின் படி அகழாய்வில் கிடைக்கும் பொருள் எத்தனை அளவு ஆழத்தில் கிடைக்கின்றன என்பதை பொறுத்து தோண்டி எடுக்கப்பட்ட தொல்பொருளின் காலம் கணிக்கப்படுகிறது.

சமான காலக்கணிப்பு முறைகள்

  1. தொல் புவிகாந்தவியல் - பூமியின் துருவங்கள் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட கால இடைவெளிக்குள் மாறிக்கொண்டே இருக்கும். அகழாய்வில் கிடைத்த தொல்பொருளின் பாலத்தில் உள்ளப்பாறைகளில் அக்காலத்தில் பாறையின் அச்சு எங்கிருந்தது என்பதை கணித்து அதை இப்போது பாறையின் அச்சு இருக்கும் இடத்தோடு தொடர்புப்படுத்தி அதில் வரும் கோண வித்யாசங்களைக் கொண்டு தொல்பொருளின் காலத்தை கணிக்கும் முறை.
  2. எரிமலைச்சாம்பல் காலக்கணிப்பு - அகழாய்வில் கிடைத்த தொல்பொருளின் பாலத்தில் ஏதேனும் எரிமலைக் குழம்பின் துணுக்குகள் காணப்பட்டால் அத்துணுக்கு எந்த எரிமலையில் வந்தது என்பதை கண்டறிந்து அந்த எரிமலை வெடித்ததன் காலத்தை தொடர்புப்படுத்தி தொல்பொருளின் காலத்தை கணிக்கும் முறை.
  3. உயிர்வளிம ஓரகத் தனிம மண்ணடுக்காய்வு - அகழாய்வில் கிடைத்த தொல்பொருளின் காலத்தில் இருந்த வானிலையைக் கொண்டு காலம் கணித்தல். (எ.கா. இடைப்பணியூழியின் பாலநிலையில் உள்ள பொருள் 1,15,000 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையானது என கணிக்கப்படும்.
