முதலாம் அல்-அலமைன் சண்டை (First Battle of El Alamein) இரண்டாம் உலகப் போரின் வடக்கு ஆப்பிரிக்கப் போர் முனையில் நிகழ்ந்த ஒரு தாக்குதல் நடவடிக்கை. இது மேற்குப் பாலைவனப் போர்த்தொடரின் ஒரு பகுதியாகும். இதில் எர்வின் ரோம்மல் தலைமையிலான அச்சுநாட்டுப் படைகளின் கிழக்கு நோக்கி முன்னேற்றத்தை நேச நாட்டுப் படைகள் தடுத்து நிறுத்தின.

1940-42ல் வடக்கு ஆப்பிரிக்காவில் அச்சுநாட்டுப் படைகளுக்கும் நேச நாட்டுப் படைகளுக்கும் கடும் சண்டை நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. இரு தரப்பினருக்கும் வெற்றியும் தோல்வியும் மாறி மாறி ஏற்பட்டன. 1942 மே மாதம் நடந்த கசாலா சண்டையில் அச்சுப் படைகளுக்கு கிடைத்த பெரும் வெற்றியால் நிலைகுலைந்த நேச நாட்டுப் படைகள் கசாலா அரண்நிலைகளில் இருந்து மெர்சா மாத்ரூ அரண்நிலைகளுக்குப் பின்வாங்கின. லிபிய-எகிப்து எல்லையிலிருந்து எகிப்து நாட்டுப்பகுதிக்குள் 100 கிமீ தொலைவில் இந்த அரண்கோடு அமைந்திருந்தது. முதலில் இந்த அரண்நிலையில் ரோம்மலின் படைகளை எதிர்கொள்ள நேச நாட்டுப் படைகள் திட்டமிட்டிருந்தனர். மெர்சா மாத்ரூவில் தாக்கும் படைகள் எளிதாக சுற்றி வளைத்து பாதுகாவல் படைகளை பக்கவாட்டில் இருந்து தாக்குவதற்கு வசதியாக புவியியல் அமைப்பு அமைந்திருந்தது. ரோம்மல் இத்தகைய சுற்றி வளைத்துத் தாக்கும் போர் உத்திகளை விரும்பி கையாள்பவராகையால், அவரது தாக்குதலில் இருந்து மெர்சா மாத்ரூவைப் பாதுகாக்க முடியாது என்று நேச நாட்டுத் தளபதிகள் உணர்ந்தனர். எனவே இந்த அரண்நிலையிலிருந்தும் பின்வாங்கி கிழக்கே 100 கிமீ தொலைவிலுள்ள எல் அலாமெய்ன் என்ற இடத்தில் புதிய அரண்நிலைகளை அமைத்தனர். அலாமீனின் தெற்கே கட்டாரா என்ற பள்ளப்பகுதி (Quattara depression) அமைந்திருந்தால், ரோம்மலால் இந்த அரண்நிலையை எளிதில் சுற்றி வளைக்க முடியாது என்று அவர்கள் கருதினர்.

அலாமெய்ன் அரண்நிலையை பலப்படுத்துவதற்கான அவகாசத்தை தன் படைகளுக்கு அளிக்க, நேச நாட்டு தளபதி கிளாட் ஆச்சின்லெக், ரோம்மலின் படை முன்னேற்றத்தைத் தாமதப்படுத்தும் முயற்சிகளில் இறங்கினார். சூன் 26-27ல் மெர்சா மாத்ரூ, சூன் 28ல் ஃபூக்கா ஆகிய இடங்களில் ரோம்மலின் முன்னணி படைகளுடன் நேச நாட்டுப் படைப்பிரிவுகள் மோதி அவற்றை தாமதப்படுத்தின. இதனால் சூன் 30ம் தேதி தான் ரோம்மலின் படைகள் எல் அலாமெய்ன் அரண்நிலைகளை அடைந்தன. அதற்கு மறுநாள் (சூலை 1) அலாமெய்ன் மீதான அச்சுத் தாக்குதல் தொடங்கியது. அலாமீனின் புவியியல் அமைப்பால் சுற்றி வளைத்து தாக்கும் உத்தியை ரோம்மலால் பயன்படுத்த இயலவில்லை. நேரடியாக பலமான நேச நாட்டு அரண்நிலைகளின் மீது தாக்கவேண்டியதாயிற்று. ஐந்து நாட்கள் இடைவிடாது தாக்குதல் நடத்தியும் ரோம்மலின் படைகளால் அலாமெய்ன் அரண்நிலையை ஊடுருவ முடியவில்லை. பெரும் இழப்புகளுடன் தன் தாக்குதலைத் தற்காலிகமாக நிறுத்திய ரோம்மல், அலாமெய்ன் அரண்நிலைக்கு எதிராக தானும் ஒரு அரண்நிலையை உருவாக்கத் தொடங்கினார். அச்சுப் படைகளின் தாக்குதல் திறன் பெரும்பாலும் அழிந்துபோனதை உணர்ந்த ஆச்சின்லெக், அச்சு நிலைகளின் மீது எதிர்த்தாக்குதலைத் தொடங்கினார்.

அடுத்த இருபது நாட்கள் இரு தரப்பினரும் அலாமீனில் அமைந்துள்ள பல மணல் முகடுகளைக் கைப்பற்ற கடுமையாக மோதிக் கொண்டனர். டெல் எல் ஐசா, ருவைசாத், மித்தெயிர்யா ஆகிய முகடுகளைக் கைப்பற்ற மீண்டும் மீண்டும் பல சண்டைகள் நிகழ்ந்தன. இத்தொடர் மோதல்களால் சூலை இறுதியில் இரு தரப்பு படைப்பிரிவுகளும் பலத்த சேதங்களுக்கு ஆளாகி இருந்தன. பிரிட்டானிய 8வது ஆர்மியும், ரோம்மலின் ஆப்பிரிக்கா கோரும் தொடர்ந்து சண்டையிட இயலாத அளவுக்கு பலவீனமடைந்திருந்தன. யாருக்கும் வெற்றி தோல்வியின்றி இச்சண்டை முடிவடைந்தாலும், அலெக்சாந்திரியா நோக்கியான ரோம்மலின் முன்னேற்றம் தடைபட்டுப் போனது. பிரிட்டானியத் தளபதி ஆச்சின்லெக்கின் மீது நம்பிக்கை இழந்த பிரிட்டானிய பிரதமர் வின்ஸ்டன் சர்ச்சில் அவருக்கு பதிலாக லெப்டினன்ட் ஜெனரல் வில்லியம் கோட் என்பவரை 8வது ஆர்மியின் தளபதியாக நியமித்தார். ஆனால் வடக்கு ஆப்பிரிக்காவுக்கு கோட் சென்ற வானூர்தி மீது ஜெர்மானிய வான்படை நடத்திய தாக்குதலில் அவர் கொல்லப்பட்டார். அவருக்கு பதிலாக பெர்னார்ட் மோண்ட்கோமரி புதிய பிரிட்டானிய தளபதியாக நியமிக்கப்பட்டார்.
