As I understood yesterday, most tamil wikians are using the tamil 99 keyboard to type tamil. I suggest you to integrate this typing facility to tamil wiki, instead of forcing using users to download/install various plug-ins/softwares

I will help you to develop solution for Tamil 99 keyboard. It is not a big task as we have already developed similar solution for Malayalam

I wouldn't say many Tamil Wikians use Tamil99 but I would welcome more layouts integrated not just the transliteration layout. To begin with we can integrate the transliteration layout. What would you need to do this? Admin access?--இரவி

hmm. I was told that most of Tamil wikipedians use Tamil 99. But there is no meaning in integrating all the keyboard layouts. Wikipedia can take some initiative to bring out some standerdization in the way the people input text. We have done like that and there is some standardization now.

The way we done is, we have used the most used transliteration scheme customized for Malayalam wiki to include all the possible key combinations. Now people who are using transliteration are happy with that scheme. We will not add another transliteration scheme. Now people outseide wiki start creating application based on this scheme which has become a standard. So the transliteration is scheme for Malayalam is almost fixed.

Due to initiative from Kerala Govt. many in kerala (especially school children and teachers) have learned the inscript way of typing Malayalam. As you may know inscript way of typing is the most efficient way of inputting indic text with minimum number of key strokes. In a way Tamil 99 is similar to that. But inscript is differnet from Tamil 99 and it is available for Tamil also. When we conducted wiki workshops in Kerala recently many people requested (I must say almost 60% of the participants who attended each of the wiki workshops) to integrate the inscript solution also to Malayalam wiki. So we have included that also.

So my suggestion is to include one customized version of Transliteration scheme and the Tamil 99 keyborad. If many ask for inscript, include that also. But please do not go beyond that.

Let us first develop the solution. We need your help to test it before integrating to Wikipedia. The testing of Malayalam for Tranliteration is done here: http://toolserver.org/~junaid/transliteration/transliterator.php

Similarly we will create tool for Tamil and give it you. At this point of time we need your help to test it.

Junaid is the person who is developing it. I am just coordinating it.

Can you please please forward the technical specifications (details for key combination) for Tamil 99 and the most commonly used transliteration scheme. Let us start working on it, and enhance it as the testing proceeds.

Personally, many of us prefer Tamil99 given that it is a well-designed keyboard initiated by the Government of Tamil Nadu and approved at a Tamil Tech conference (IIRC). It is ergonomic and leverages Tamil phonological rules.

So, Shiju, as you suggested, we can have Tamil99 and another transliteration scheme. I thank you once again for this initiative.

The Malayalam wikipedia innovations are truly awesome.Initially the CD S/W for non latinic Wikis and now inbuilt keyboard for input.Thanks to Shiju for offering to work with us for the benefit of Tamil wiki community.

We need not feel shy to enforce Tamil99. It is after all the one approved by Tamilnadu Govt.As Srilankan Tamils are a major contributors, instead of transliteration kbd, why not Bamini Kbd ?

Does this means that most of the Srilankan tamil wikimedians use Bamini Kbd? How is it similar or different from Tamil 99/Transliteration/Inscript? There is no issue in integrating one more solution. But as far as Tamil language is concerned start developing some standard for input methods and schemes.
We tested the solution for FF,IE, and Google chrome browsers. The OS tested are Windows XP, Windows 7 and GNU/Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora). Manian, thanks for reminding about Bamini. SriLanka has a national standard keyboard (bamini / remington?). So we should include that. Now we are testing Tamil99 and transliteration keyboard. Next can be Bamini and let's freeze with that.

Tamil 99 typing tool is ready for testing[தொகு]

Dear All,

The Tamil 99 typing tool that can be integrated to Tamil wiki is ready for testing. It is available here: http://toolserver.org/~junaid/transliteration/transliterator_ta99.php

Mayooranathan, Sundar, Selava, and Ravi had helped with a preliminary round of testing. So most of the major issues are fixed now. Now I request the help of all Tamil wikiians to rigorously test this application and report all the errors that you face. Place the feedback on the talk page of this page.

I know that Tamilians use Indo-arabic numerals (1,2,3...) in their daily life. Hence the default numerals in this tool is also Indo-Arabic. But the facility to type Tamil numerals is also included in this tool. It might be required at some places (for example, in the articles and talk pages that discusses about Tamil numerals). To get Tamil numerals use \ key and then type the numeral. For example to get the tamil numeral ௩ type \3. \0 = ௦, \1 = ௧, \2 = ௨, and so on.

Tamil Typing Tools are ready[தொகு]

Both Tamil 99 and Tamil Transliteration typing tools are ready to integrated to Tamil wiki after rigorous testing. Hope once it is integrated to wiki you can refine it according to the requirements of Tamil wiki community. Since we were told that most people prefer Tamil 99 we made that as the default tool.

Sreekanth, see the discussion in talk page regarding the shortcut key. We do not have much choice for short cut keys. So we took a short cut key which will work with out any issues in Firefox and IE, the most widely used browsers. One option for you is, you can write some code to disable the current functionality of CTRL + M in Google chrome. But don't make shortcut key too complicated. Files should be in one project[தொகு]

It is suggested that all the JS files should be in one project (tawiki) only so that if there is any enhancement or fixing then it will be synchronized in other ta wikis.

Feedback - tamil 99[தொகு]

Shiju, I had tested in IE,FF,Opera,Safari and Chrome browsers with some test sentences. It is working very nicely. The switch over to Tamil/English through Ctrl+M is working only in IE and FF. Other browsers use this shortcut for some function n hence dont work. Hi Maniyan,

This is a known issue, since different browsers use different shortcut keys for the same function. We do not have any control over it. Hence we do not have much choice for the shortcut keys. Some one suggested whether we can use CTRL + T for Tamil. That is possible. But I am not sure, if we implement that whether that will create problem in some other browser.

Any way Tamil wiki community can decide on the shortcut key. But the selected short cut key should work perfectly at least in FF and IE, since those are most widely used browsers --Shijualex 11:03, 23 நவம்பர் 2010 (UTC)[பதிலளி]

I started testing today this Tamil99 in Tamil Wikipedia while in Firefox 7.0.1 on Ubuntu 10.04 OS. Found so far the following bug:

On pressing an Akara-consonant 3 times or more, that is in cases of udanilai meimmayakam | உடனிலை மெய்ம்மயக்கம்- for example:

For the sake of this discussion say the key for க is referred to as <key_h> (because in qwerty keyboard the key for h is used for Tamil99 க ) then

<key_h><key_h><key_h> should yield க்கக whereas the keymap here tested yields க்க்க
<key_h><key_h><key_h><key_h> should yield க்கக்க whereas the keymap here tested yields க்க்க்க

The further repetitions of the keystrokes should also yield the same alternating pattern. That is as per the following:

i) When number of keystrokes is odd (greater or equal to 3) the last two akara-consonants remain akara-consonants (examples க்கக, க்கக்கக .....)

ii) When the number of keystrokes is even (greater or equal to 2) then the penultimate akara-consonant gets pulli. (examples: க்க, க்கக்க, க்கக்கக்க .....)

Please note for the other meimmayakkam - that is ஒத்திசைவு மெய்ம்மயக்கம் cases this bug is not seen - examples: ங்கங, ங்கங்க, ஞ்சஞ, ஞ்சஞ்ச, ....

Srikanth, Google transliteration is algorithm based prediction and customised to each user. The transliteration scheme we use in Wiki is years old, rule based and fairly standardised. It is good to include open and standard schemes in Wiki than proprietary APIs like the one from Google. When I came to Tamil Wikipedia, it was a challenge to me to type Tamil text. I asked for help many times in Sandbox and Help page. But all prescribed me to download softwares & install plug-ins(ad-ons). I think you've done almost. I can tell tell 100% that Tamil Wikipedia going to be India's top and will get a seat in the round.

Junaid, big THANKS to you and Malayalam Wikipedians. I always use FF to type Tamil (tamil 99) because it only supports add-ons. Now i can use other browsers to type Tamil. Once I select tamil99 or Ctrl M, how to come back to English? do we have any short cut or any way to come back to English? In Transliteration (Thamingilam), when I press the "N" key the letter ந is coming But it has not to come. Instead of ந, letter ன has to come. Because we have the ந already in "W".So we need to change the key combination.

There is a problem with IE 7/8 and the transliteration. This issue is already listed here We will try to fix this as early as possible.

It surprises me to note that many Tamil wiki users are still using IE. In Malayalam, we have hardly anyone using it. Most of us use FireFox, Chrome, or Opera which has excellent support for Indic language scripts. Fixing issues for IE is always a challenge in software development.

Tamil Transliteration works in both FireFox and Google Chrome, but not in IE.
As above mentioned by Surya Prakash.S.A., cannot find the letter ன் which usually lies in 'n'. The 'n' gives only ந் which we get in 'w'.
ப் is given in 'p' only and the 'b' gives no Tamil script. I used to get ப் in both 'p' and 'b'.
க் is provided in 'k' only and the 'g' gives no Tamil script. I used to get க் in both 'g' and 'k'.
Otherwise, all letters are ok.

Two things

I request Tamil community to reach a consensus about providing temporary admin ship to Junaid. The reason is, admin right is required to edit the pages in Mediawiki namespace) to fix these errors. Tamil community have to decide on this. Other wise it is very time consuming to fix errors some where else, requesting someone to test it, making some other person understand the fix, and finally fix the errors here. If community can provide temp. admin ship to Junaid much time can be saved.
If community can help us with the testing of transliteration it can be made perfect within few days. Initially when I placed the request for the feedback for Transliteration (http://toolserver.org/~junaid/transliteration/transliterator_ta.php), we haven't got much response. Transliteration is bit complicated because each person use their own transliteration. So we need to reach a consensus in wiki about the scheme that needs to be used in Tamil wiki projects. Let this scheme be the standard scheme for Tamil. In this way, Tamil wiki community can take initiative to bring some standard to Tamil transliteration. Once you make this as standard people outside wiki also will use it.

So those of who can help us with the testing of transliteration please place there names here We shall create a page in Tamil wiki, and collect all the feedback for transliteration at one place and make it perfect. Collecting feedback at one place will allow us identify conflicting feedback. Many a time we were asked to assign the same key for 2 different tamil alphabets. I have fixed the issue of IE with transliteration. You may need to fully clear the cache of IE to take effect the change. I will work for default unchecking of checkboxes too. User Preference

Junaid, is there a way this option can be obtained from user preferences?. I see different type of users.

Users who use external tools and want this feature to be completely disabled. (unchecked)
Users who want this tool and using Tamil99.
Users who want this tool and using Transliteration.
Anon users who would in majority might be preferring transliteration.

As of now, the above issues can be fixed by doing two things.

make the check box off by default (please be patient, we are working on it. Hope we will be able arrive at a solution soon. Give us some time. We already fixed the IE issue)
make transliteration as the first tool. The reason is, most anonymous/new users prefer Transliteration. If they select the first option (now Tamil 99) and start typing, which they will not be familiar any way, they will find it difficult and annoying. But transliteration will give meaningful words. Tamil 99 users will anyway know how select the tool (Tamil 99) and use it according to their convenience. Think this from news user's perspective.

But most important is, let Tamil community prepare good help page (with images) about both these tools. For example, see Malayalam help page. So we are done. Our role is almost over in Tamil wikipedia. Now the rest is with the Tamil wiki community. There are few pending tasks like refining the Transliteration tool and fixing the any remaining bugs in Tamil 99. Hope Sundar, Ravi, or some other Tamil wiki admins can handle it.

Please make sure you integrate this to other tamil wiki projects only after you finalize the tool in Wikipedia. Let the tool in Wikipedia be the master code for tamil wiki projects.

Chrome[தொகு]

Chrome is having many issues.

if we go from template edit from essay, tamil box is not available. ex வார்ப்புரு:நாமக்கல் மாவட்டம் select தொ for edit you can't see the box but if you select edit from top menu you can see it.
some times in first page i don't see tamil writing box to check.
if i try to edit particular section tamil writing box is missing. If i click essay edit i can see the box. I try to type in Transliteration Tool but tamil writing box is missing, so i using essay edit and started chrome section.
Some times if you go through links you can not see Tamil option selection and box to check it. I noticed it but it is not in consistence.

Google chrome has an issue of not loading the tool properly. It is mainly due to unavailability of tool in its cache. Most of the time this issue come when we open wiki pages for first time. Once the tool is in its cache, it woks almost without further problems. In the file upload page, even though the default "write in tamil" option is unchecked by default, it is turned on in the "file name" and "description" boxes. I have to press ctrl m twice to get rid of the option--சோடாபாட்டில் 05:35, 3 திசம்பர் 2010 (UTC)[பதிலளி]

In transliteration tool sometimes "n" key gives ன் sometimes we get ந். This is an annoying problem and it slows down the work. Shiju says it is only a small job, but they are unable to do anything as they don't have access.
