இயற்கை அறிவியல் நம்மைச் சுற்றியுள்ள உலகும் அண்டமும் எவ்வாறு இயங்குகின்றன என்பதைக் கண்டறிய முற்படுகிறது. இதில் முதன்மையாக ஐந்து கிளைகள் உள்ளன: வேதியியல் (நடு), வானியல், புவி அறிவியல், இயற்பியல், மற்றும் உயிரியல் (மேல்-இடதிலிருந்து வலச்சுற்றாக).

இயற்கை அறிவியல் (natural sciences) என்பது இயற்கை உலகத்தை நடாத்துகின்ற பல்வேறு விதிகளை அறிவியல்சார்ந்த முறைமைகளால் விளக்க முற்படுகின்ற அறிவியலின் கிளை ஆகும்.^[1] "இயற்கை அறிவியல்" என்ற சொல்லாட்சி மனித நடத்தைகளையும் சமூக அமைப்புக்களையும் அறிவியல் அறிவு வழி கொண்டு ஆய்கின்ற சமூக அறிவியலில் இருந்தும் மனித நிலைகளை பகுத்தாய்வு நோக்குடன் ஆய்கின்ற மனிதவள அறிவியலில் இருந்தும் வழமையான அறிவியலான கணிதம், ஏரணம் போன்றவற்றில் இருந்தும் வேறுபடுத்துமாறு பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.
