எல்ம் இலை உதிர்க்கின்ற மற்றும் பகுதியும் உதிர்க்கின்ற மரம். இவை பூக்கும் தாவரம் பேரினமான உல்மஸ் சேர்ந்தவை. இந்த மரங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் வடக்கு அரைக்கோளத்தில் சைபீரியாவிலிருந்து இந்தோனேசியா வரையிலும் மெக்சிகோவிலிருந்து சப்பான் வரையிலும் காணப்படுகின்றன.[1][2]
எல்ம் மரங்கள் பெரும்பாலான இயற்கையான அடர்வனங்களில் காணக்கிடைக்கின்றன. தவிரவும் 19வது 20ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் இவை ஐரோப்பா, வட அமெரிக்கப் பகுதிகளில் தோட்டம், பூங்காக்கள் போன்றவற்றில் அழகுத் தாவரமாகவும் வளர்க்கப்படலாயிற்று.
