ஜுடித் ரைட் ஆஸ்திரேலியாவில்,நியூ சவுத் வேல்ஸ் மாகாணத்தில் உள்ள அர்மிடேலில் பிறந்தார். பிலிப் ரைட் மற்றும் அவருடைய முதல் மனைவி இதெல் இருவருக்கும் மூத்தமகனாகப் பிறந்தார். ஜுடித் ரைட் தன்னுடைய இளமைப் பருவத்தை பிாிஸ்பென் மற்றும் சிட்னியில் கழித்தார். அவருடைய அம்மாவின் மரணத்திற்குப் பிறகு, தன் அத்தையுடன் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். அவருடைய தந்தை 1929-ல் மறுமணம் செய்து கொண்டதற்குப் பிறகு, ஜுடித் ரைட் நியூ இங்கிலாந்து பெண்கள் பள்ளியில் சேர்க்கப்பட்டார். பள்ளிப் படிப்பை முடித்த பிறகு சிட்னி பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் தத்துவம், ஆங்கிலம், உளவியல் மற்றும் வரலாறு ஆகிய பாடங்களைக் கற்றார். இரண்டாம் உலகப் போாின் துவக்கத்தில், ஆள் பற்றாக்குறையைத் தீர்க்கும் பொருட்டு தன் தந்தையின் இருப்பிடத்தற்குச் சென்று உதவினார்.

ரைட்டின் முதல் புத்தகம் "தி மூவிங் இமேஜ்" (The Moving Image) 1946-ல் வெளியிடப்பட்டது. அப்பொழுது ரைட் குயின்ஸ்லாந்து பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் ஆராய்ச்சியாளராகப் பணியாற்றி வந்தார்.
