Unexplained reverts and Incorrect References

Apologies for using English here for quickness of typing.

These reverts have been made by the user @Arularasan. G without providing any reason in the description or talk page, and the user has removed proper referenced explanation (without checking them) that I had added from a published authoritative Dictionary. He replaces it with a Wiktionary entry for மாரி where all the meanings of மாரி are listed without explaining which meaning of it applies to மாரியம்மன். Obviously this user assumes that he can apply whichever meaning indiscriminately, so he uses it as a proof that மாரி in மாரியம்மன் stands for 'rain'.

Madras University Tamil Lexicon

I had mentioned the Madras University Tamil Lexicon entries for மாரியம்மன் and மாரி² - which clearly mention that in the word மாரியம்மன், the word மாரி has the second meaning மாரி² (and not the first meaning மாரி¹) - I quote these below

Fabricius Tamil & English Dictionary

Another dictionary (Fabricius Tamil & English Dictionary) also says the same thing (ignore the word "evil" as the author was a Christian missionary and it may have been his personal spite/hate):

மாரி , s. death, சாவு; 2. a contagious disease; 3. small-pox; 4. the evil goddess of small-pox. மாரியம்மன், -யம்மை, -யாத்தாள், the goddess of small-pox.

It does not link the மாரி part of மாரியம்மன் to the meaning "மழை"

Miron Winslow's Comprehensive Tamil and English Dictionary

Yet another dictionary (Miron Winslow's Comprehensive Tamil and English Dictionary) also says the same thing ( here too ignore the word "evil" as the author was a Christian missionary and it may have been his personal spite/hate):

*மாரி māri, s. Death, சாவு. 2. A destructive and contagious disease, ஓர் ஒட்டுநோய். W. p. 658. MARI. 3. An evil goddess, supposed to inflict the small-pox, and to deliver from it, Chandi. 4. A variety of the small-pox, மாரிமுத்து.மாரியம்மன்–மாரியம்மை–மாரியாத்தாள், s. The goddess, as மாரி, 3. மாரியம்மன்கொண்டாடி, appel. n. One possessed with that evil spirit.

It does not link the மாரி part of மாரியம்மன் to the meaning "மழை"

Hence, I think people who decide to revert or remove published academic sources must stop making knee-jerk reverts and focus on looking at the academic references used and what they actually say. Any native Tamil speakers would know that Mariamman is the goddess of smallpox and chickenpox etc - and மாரி literally means மரணம் (death), when people pray to her they seek protection from death due to small pox by trying to please her by making offerings. Besides, I was born and brought up in Tamil Nadu and I have never seen மாரியம்மன் being treated as a goddess of rain. முத்துமாரி is her other name referring to the pearl-like poxes of smallpox, which wont make sense if we take மாரி as rain.

Please can someone verify the above and ensure that the user's reverts are undone and my updates (using the above accurate reference) are restored - as I dont want to undo his reverts myself as he may indulge in edit-warring. Srkris (பேச்சு) 16:31, 5 செப்டெம்பர் 2025 (UTC)
