FEEDBACK[தொகு]

(most is translated real-time from Tamil)

- Very happy! Very useful because he knew some programming. 2 days is great, more

is really hard, 2d is good time. If you have an engineering background, it is
great since you know people with same language. It was all great. Had ideas like
this, but did not know where it is or what to do. It is great to be aware.

- It is a new thing. User guide, need follow up. Offline setup. No documentation

for followup, needs videos - since there is no guarantee of personal help later on.
Screencasts are super useful since they stay on after. Would be great if that
could be recorded afterwards.

- Phabricator. Was given more importance. Not sure if useful. Other person says

it was super useful, they have never used it. It was great for people who were
here who had never used a ticket tracking system. Was right amount of detail for
most, but not all.

- What does success look like for this? How is this being evaluated? How is this

 ongoing? (Answer from Asaf)
It is not to just demo tools - it is to empower them to take charge of their tech destiny.
- Wikidata
- Survey - not just you but everyone in tamil community, do they feel that the community
as a whole is better equipped? Are bot requests answered?
- What is cared about is the state of tamil community, not a single volunteer. If there is a
tech task or bug to report, is there someone who is aware of what to do to get it resolved?
- Notice bot activity.
- If there is a significant improvement, we will assume this contributed to success

- Are there other modes of training? (Answer from Asaf)

 - This is the start of the heart of the experiment.
- Hope is that when there is a technical issue, you will feel better and reach out. Either in
channels that you are already aware of or by just emailing us.
- We deliberately pay attention to tech needs of tamil community, but we need them to tell us
- Provide more feedback - it is a two sided conversation, to ask them, as it asks, etc.

- What is the commitment from staff? Is there an assurance that there is going to be more staff

time dedicated to actually providing *attention*?
- (asaf) I can promise you attention, I can not promise solutions / bug fixes. We need to be able
give you an answer. This is something I do want to commit to, even if the response is 'not right
now, here is a schedule'.
- We had community survey, never thought tamil community needs technical training, sometimes back.
So when presented with 6 domains of possible training, thought they were self sufficient. Now that
opinion has changed, we still have a long way to go. Need to take to the next stage. We also have
people who do not know how to use VE / GDrive, etc. Even if we have 5d training there is enough
material to be said to fixed. Very good to do this without a PEG. Making it easy is nice for smaller
communities
- People have lots of ideas and things to do, but are doing things manually. Someone had started to
program to assist. Very lazy to learn, is nice to have someone to show you 'yeah, this is what you
can do'. Small programs already do most of those things.
- Project is ongoing to integrate Google OCR with Wikisource, see how that goes.
- PAWS we were using for running the bots was very useful - setting up terminal and other things
takes one day. This was very useful, made it possible to access it everywhere. It was great.
- Next might be more hackathon - with people in Chennai, have set of goals and help build them.
All wiki contributors will have some requirements with them, need to collect requirements and work
on a hackaton to build them. Otherwise you write code in your home and you get bored or you have
a question and you do not know to ask. IRC has TZ problems, mailing lists have high latency, having
one set up of local in person hackathons will be nice.
- (Yuvi has promised to do some gadget help!)
- PWB setting up takes too much time, doubly so with Windows / limited internet / language issues.
- initial confusion about where this was going. There were too many tools / demos and that was a bit
confusing. Wikidata demo was very super cool, but some of the other tools was a little too much. We
need to pace the program because there were some newbies who needed hands-on help.

- Having the translation happened help. Was able to approach, even people who did speak english were

intimidated. So having someone super approachable who spoke the language was great. People had
seen some of the videos and were intimidated about English, so having someone made that useful.

Yuvi, Important in handson training - how to raise tickets in phabricator and interact with devs and sysadmins.
There are even some bugs reported and reolved/solution has been provided.
Happy about the Bot session. This is first session using paws (Jupyter).
Though there are some small bugs everyone was able to do some handson using the bots.

 Why this community?
(Asaf) - Pilot program. Unlike past programs, we didn't start with 50 communiteies or 100 training events but small with a pilot. So from the beginning we decided to do it only in 2 as a pilot,
one small and one large, since there are different dynamics. People in the room here are a large
force in the tamil community, but in a larger community, any 20 people will never be a significant enough force because they are a larger group.
I published last year set up an open call for communities to sign up for working with the WMF to figure
out what capacity we could build together, in *partnership* (stress on partnership). Looking for
communities he could work with. As an example, there was a single wikipedian who signed up but was
not sure there was a community behind him. Building a whole community's capacity, with consensus, training
for something that is wanted by the community. Never force anything on the community. 5-6 communities expressed
interest. What was determined is wether you can have a partnership or wether they can't pull through with the amount
of work they need to do about it. Everyone did a lot of work to make this happen. Looking for communities that were not
just vaguely interested but looking to actively help.
India is 'strategic', so more Tamil was advantageos. Asaf knew Ravi personally, so he knows and trusts his organizational
skills. He is also accepted in this community, and he can be accepted to represent most of the community. This is not
true for all communities. Not all comminitues are relatively harmonious as the tamil community is. The underlying reason is
that Asaf intuitively thinks the CCD is a good idea. Wanted to take a 'safe' bet, to know for sure that this will happen regardless
of turmoil at the WMF, so that the CCD program gets a fair chance to prove itself worthwhile.

When you come to a local community, you meet far more people and meet different profiles of contributors. Important to
physically meet you and talk to you and observe during breaks/etc. Everything was smooth, no wasting time dealing with
things not working. Able to focus on what we came to do. Asaf found the attendees a receptive audience, not always there was enough
time to practice every tool individually. Maybe demo fewer tools and practice / play around for each tool. Y'all came to learn
and not just socialize.

Asaf was happy with the turnout. 15-30 would've been great, we ended up with ~22 people. Declined some newbies.
Thanks to the TVA for getting full staff here to support us during May Day for getting logistics totally sorted.

Thanks to Ravi! (*applause*)
