இவை /ˌzoʊ.əˈplæŋktən, -tɒn/)பிறசார்பு மிதவை நுண்ணுயிரிகள் ஆகும். இவைகள் கடலில் அல்லது பெருங்கடலில் அல்லது நன்னீர் நிலைகளில் அலைந்து திரியும் உயிரினம் ஆகும். "zooplankton" என்ற வார்த்தை கிரேக்க மொழியில் உள்ள விலங்குகள் என்னும் அர்த்தம் கொள்ளும் ஸூ என்ற வார்த்தையில் இருந்தும் அலைந்து திரிவது என்று அர்த்தம் கொள்ளும் வாண்டரர் என்ற வார்த்தையில் இருந்தும் தோன்றியது ஆகும்.Thurman, H. விலங்கு மிதவை நுண்ணுயிரியானது முதல் உயிரியான சிறிய அளவிலான புரோட்டாஸோவானிலிருந்து பெரிய உருவில் உள்ள விலங்குகள் வரைக்கும் உள்ள அளாவியாக பெரும் பகுப்பு கொண்டது. இவற்றுள் தன் வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் மிதவை உயிரிகளாகவே வாழும் முழுமிதவைவாழிகள் மற்றும் தன் வாழ்நாளில் பகுதியை மிதவாழியாகவும் பகுதியை கடலுக்கடியிலும் நன்கு நீந்தி கழிக்கும் பகுமிதவை வாழிகள் ஆகியவை அடங்கும். விலங்கு மிதவை உயிரிகள் பொதுவாக கடலின் அலை அடிக்கும் திசையிலே அடித்து செல்லும் தன்மை உடையதாக இருந்தாலும் இவைகள் தாங்களாகவே அங்கும் இங்கும் செல்லும் வகையில் இடம்பெயர் உறுப்புகளும் உடையதாகக் காணப்படும். இவ் இடம் பெயர் உறுப்புகள் இவைகளை இரையாக்கும் உயிரிகளிடம் இருந்து தப்பிக்கவும் இவைகள் பிடித்து இரையாக உண்ணும் உயிரிகளின் அளவை அதிகரிக்கவும் உதவுகிறது. சூழ்நிலையியலில் முக்கிய புரோட்டாஸோவான்கள் விலங்கு மிதவைஉயிரிகளின் குழுமங்கள் ஃபோராமினிஃபெரான், ரேடியோலேரியன்ஸ் மற்றும் டைனோஃப்ளக்லேட்ஸ் போன்றவை முக்கியமானதாகும்.
