Do visit Sri Lanka, we love to see you. Sure we can start Tamil - Marathi wiktioanry. Already Tamil wiktionary is up and running and it happened to be listed in first 15 Wiktionaries based on number of words. You can start to add Marathi words and similar tamil words there. You can check out Tamil Wiktionary at http://ta.wiktionary.org

Welcome to Tamil Wikipedia

Hi Prasannakumar, welcome to Tamil Wikipedia. When I was at IIT Bombay I learnt a little bit of Marathi and I can understand some of it even today. I have good friends who speak Marathi. Glad to see a Maharashtrian in Tamil Wikipedia. I hope we can collaborate to create Marathi-related content in Tamil. And would help out similarly Tamil related articles in Marathi. I can read and write in Devanagari, but not proficiently though. I've a Marathi dictionary too (compiled by Medha Velankar, Read Well's Marathi-English Dictionary). Hi Prasannakumar, please feel free to address me as Selva (my userid is in Tamil letters). I have a suggestion for you regarding Marathi. I was surprised that Marathi Wiktionary does not have words for father, mother, tiny etc. I was going to say mala maraathi yEtat naahi, parantu.. but I forgot the word for a "little" and I tried Marathi Wiktionary and couldn't get the word I forgot. I know that kucha-kuchna means whispering which in Tamil goes a kusu-kusu-nnu, and I know tukdaa, tuccaa, तुटपुंजा (meagre, scanty), तोटका (meagre, scanty) are not the words I'm looking for. I think it would be useful to build Marathi wiktionary as well. I can provide equivalent Tamil words there. Let us build a 1000 Marathi-Tamil word equivalents. प्रेमास्वरूप आई is one of my favourite songs (I first heard around 1973!). I tried to find the word आई in the Marathi dictionary I had. I couldn't find it. I know it is there and it means mother. All I could find in the dictionary I have is aayaa (nurse) (which is also there in Tamil in the same sense). The word आय is there in the send of mother. In Tamil too आय (ஆய், aay) means mother. आई in Tamil also means mother but written as ஆயி (aayi).The आय can become thaay (ताय) in Tamil meaning mother. In ancient literature another word yaay (याय) means mother. The root is aay. Since I was searching for basic words in Marathi dictionary, and since I couldn't find entires for mother and father etc. I wanted to ask you about it and in that connection my old favourite song प्रेमास्वरूप आई came to my mind. About starting Marathi-Tamil, word list, I can start adding in Tamil Wiktionary Marathi words with Tamil equivalents and you can do the same (add Marathi meanings to Tamil words in Marathi Wiktionary). We can start right away.I'll add some 4-5 words later today. About Tanjore Marathi, there is a lot one can do by way of research and I really don't know what is happening there. Some of the words there might have fallen out of use in Maharashtra (or might have evolved with a different meaning now). Thought of adding some more information on Tamil and Marathi relations. There is a book called "Adagula madagula" by V. A Khaire (in Marathi). I have not read the book, one of my friend (Dhaval Joshi, he lives in Kalyan, Mumbai) read and we had discussion on that. It was a interesting piece of work.
