வெடிமருந்து (Gunpowder) என்பது மிகப் பழைய வேதியியல் வெடிபொருளாகும். இது கந்தகம், கரி, பொட்டாசியம் நைத்திரேட்டு ஆகியவற்றைக் கொண்ட ஒரு வெடிபொருட் கலவை ஆகும். இதில் உள்ள கந்தகமும் கரியும் எரிபொருள்களாகவும் பொட்டாசியம் நைட்டிரேட்டு உயிரகமேற்றியாகவும் பயன்படுகின்றன.[1][2] மிக விரைவாக எரிந்து சூடான திண்மங்களையும் பெரிய பருமனளவுள்ள வளிமங்களையும் உண்டாக்கக்கூடிய இயல்பால், இது சுடுகலன்களில் உந்துவிசையை உருவாக்கவும், பட்டாசுகளிலும் ஏவூர்திகளிலும் பயன்படுகின்றது. மேலும் கல்லுடைப்பிலும் சுருங்கைகளிலும் சாலை அமைக்கவும் கூட இது பயன்படுகிறது.
வெடிமருந்து 9 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் சீனாவில் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டு, 13 ஆம் நூற்றாண்உக்குள் ஐரோப்பாசிய முழுவதும் பரவிவிட்டது.[3] Most arguments on early gunpowder developments now revolve around how much Chinese advancements in gunpowder influenced gunpowder warfare in the Middle East and Europe, வெடிமருந்தின் துல்லியமான தோற்ற இடம் குறித்த விவாதம் இன்றும் தொடர்ந்தவண்ணமே உள்ளது.[4][5]
வெடிமருந்து, சிதைவடையும்போது ஒப்பீட்டளவில் மெதுவாகச் சிதைவடைவதால் அதனால் மெதுவாக எரிதலாலும் தாழ்நிலை வெடிபொருளாக வகைப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. உயர்நிலை வெடிபொருட்கள் வெடிப்புத் தூண்டலினால் (detonation) ஒலியினும் மிகுந்த வேகம் கொண்ட அழுத்த அலைகளை உருவாக்கும்போது, தாழ்நிலை வெடிபொருட்கள் எரிந்து ஒலியினும் குறைவான வேகம் கொண்ட அழுத்த அலைகளையே உருவாக்குகின்றன. வெடிமருந்து எரிவதனால் உருவாகும் வளிமங்களின் அழுத்தம் துப்பாக்கிக் குண்டுகளை உந்துவதற்குப் போதுமானது எனினும், சுடுகலனின் குழாயைச் சிதைக்கும் அளவுக்குப் போதியது அல்ல. இதனால், பாறைகளையோ உறுதியாக அரண்களையோ உடைப்பதற்கு "வெடிமருந்து" பொருத்தமானது அல்ல. இத்தகைய தேவைகளுக்கு டி.என்.டி எனப்படும் முந்நைத்திரோ தொலுயீன் போன்ற உயர் வெடிபொருட்கள் தேவைப்படுகின்றன. என்றாலும் 19 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டின் இடைப்பகுதியில் உயர்வெடிபொருள்கள் தோன்றும் வரை படைத்துறையிலும் தொழில்துறையிலும் பயன்பாட்டி இருந்துவந்தது. மேலும் டைனமைட், அம்மோனியம் நைட்டிரேட்டு/எரிம எண்ணெய் (ANFO) ஆகியவற்றை ஒப்பிடும்போது இதன் அடக்கவிலை கூடுதலாக அமைவதால் வழக்கில் இருந்து வீழ்ந்துவிட்டது. .[6][7] இன்று வெடிமருந்து வேட்டையாடல், இலக்கு சுடுதல் பயிற்சி, எரிகுண்டற்ற வரலாற்று நிகழ்ச்சிப்படம் எடுத்தல் ஆகியவற்றில் மட்டுமே பயன்படுகிறது.

மிகப் பழைய வெடிமருந்துக்கான வாய்பாடு சீனாவில் 11 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் சாங் பேரரசில் எழுதப்பட்ட வூசிங் சாங்யாவோ எனும் பனுவலில் உள்ளது.[8] என்றாலும் 10 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டு முதலே சீனாவில் தீயம்புகளில் வெடிமருந்து பயன்பட்டுள்ளது. பிந்தைய நூற்றாண்டுகளில், சீனாவில் குண்டுகள், தீயெறிகள், சுடுகலன் போன்ற வெடிமருந்து ஆயுதங்கள் தோன்றி அங்கிருந்து ஐரோப்பாசியா முழுவதும் பரவியுள்ளது.[3] மிகப் பழைய வெடிமருந்து பற்றிய மேலைய நாடுகள் சார்ந்த விவரம் 13 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஆங்கிலேய மெய்யியலாராகிய உரோசர் பேக்கன் எழுதிய நூல்களில் இருந்து கிடைக்கிறது.[9]
