The year 2006 was a remarkable growth year for Tamil Wikipedia. The articles grew from about 1000 at the beginning to about 5600 by the end of the year. The registered users grew from about 300 to 1100 by the end of the year. The growth is not just quantity but quality. We have monitored, discussed, and analyzed our efforts to ensure that we create a Tamil Wikipedia that we can be proud about. We continually improved and explored new avenues in content development, site layout design, categorization, software development, translation, policy and guidelines development, and promotion. Portals, Tamil Wikipedia Project Countries, robot generated articles, video help guides, and the meeting with Jimbo Wales are some examples of activities in the year 2006. While we remain focused on our core activities of creating, organizing, and classifying information, we are bringing our attention to issues such as user experience, help and tutorial development, direct Tamil Unicode keyboard input, graphics, and aesthetics. As stated in the year 2005 Tamil Wikipedia Review, we are committed to neutral point of view, open processes and inclusiveness, multi lingual approach, quality, user confidence, and a healthy Wikipedia community. At Tamil Wikipedia we seek, welcome, and respect the contributions made by academics and experts. We urge all Tamils across the globe to participate in our non–profit, non-political efforts to produce and maintain a Tamil collective intelligence. The purpose of the “2006 Tamil Wikipedia Annual Review” is to note the progress and to vision a course for the near and distant future. The Annual Review calls for any Wikipedia user to add her/his Comments, particularly about the 2006 activities, and how and where Tamil Wikipedia may proceed in 2007. In requesting for such Comments, it is important to note that Tamil Wikipedia does not follow any planned or strict guidelines about its future activities. As with any Wikipedia initiative this is a holistic, co operative undertaking, which any individual or group can alter to better it. |
