மண்டையோடு பஞ்சம்
மண்டையோடு பஞ்சம் (Doji bara famine / Skull famine) 1791-92 காலகட்டத்தில் இந்தியத் துணைக்கண்டத்தைத் தாக்கிய ஒரு பெரும் பஞ்சம். 1789-95 காலகட்டத்தில் நிகழ்ந்த எல் நீனோ பருவநிலை மாற்றத்தால் இப்பஞ்சம் ஏற்பட்டது.[1][2]
1789 தொடங்கி தொடர்ச்சியாக நான்கு ஆண்டுகள் தென்மேற்குப் பருவமழை பொய்த்ததால் இப்பஞ்சம் இந்தியத் துணைக்கண்டப் பகுதிகளைக் கடுமையாகப் பாதித்தது. குறிப்பாக இந்திய ஆட்சியாளர்களின் கட்டுப்பாட்டில் இருந்த ஐதராபாத், தெற்கு மராட்டிய இராச்சியம், தக்காணம், குஜராத், மேர்வார் ஆகிய பகுதிகள் கடுமையாக பாதிக்கப்பட்டன. பிரித்தானிய கிழக்கிந்திய நிறுவனத்தின் ஆட்சிக்குட்பட்ட சென்னை மாகாணம் போன்ற பகுதிகளில் பஞ்சத்தின் கடுமை சற்று மிதமாக இருந்தது. அவற்றிலும் வடக்கு சர்க்கார் போன்ற மாவட்டங்களில் மொத்த மக்கள் தொகையில் பாதிக்கும் மேற்பட்டவர்கள் பஞ்சத்தினால் மடிந்தனர். சாலையோரங்களிலும், வயல்களிலும் மாண்டவர்களின் மண்டையோடுகளும் எலும்புகளும் புதைக்க ஆளின்றி வெயிலில் காய்ந்து கொண்டிருந்ததால் இப்பஞ்சத்துக்கு “மண்டையோடு பஞ்சம்” என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. பஞ்சம் தாக்கப்பட்ட பல பகுதிகள் பெருமளவில் மக்கள் மாண்டதாலும், எஞ்சியவர்கள் புலம் பெயர்ந்ததாலும், மக்கள் வாழா வெற்றிடங்கள் ஆகின. 1789-92 காலகட்டத்தில் பட்டினியாலும் தொற்று நோய்களாலும் ஒரு கோடியே பத்து லட்சம் பேர் மாண்டிருக்கலாம் என ஒரு கணிப்பு கூறுகிறது.[3][4][5][6]
