Is it necessary to mention names as krishna ayer, meenakshi sundaram pillai etc., including the caste names.? However popular the surname ( or the person with the surname) is I think it should be omitted if it is caste name. In recent years the habit of mentioning caste name as surname is gone and we need not introduce it to the coming generations through wikipedia. also I am against using such sentences like "rukmini was born in brahmin family". I have removed it from the article.--ரவி (பேச்சு) 09:59, 23 ஜூன் 2005 (UTC)

Ravi, I agree that, we donot have the habit of mentioning the caste now. But the fact is, it is how they were called and still called now. It is just a surname and nothing to do with the actual caste, I believe. When we are chronicling or documenting about someone, I believe we should not censor or edit a name, the way they were called before. For example, if you take the sangeetha mumoorthy (modern music trinity), we have a genius called Maari muththappillai. Now, if I have to apply the rule of censoring the caste name here, I doubt whether the people will identify who he is, if we call him as Maari Muthu :). Same applies for Muthuswami (Muthuswami Dikshithar) or Shyama (Shyama Saastri). May be now, we dont have the habit of adding the caste name, but in my opinion, there is nothing wrong in mentioning the caste name while documenting.
Also I dont think there is nothing wrong in mentioning the fact that "Rukmini was born in a brahmin family". This is an important fact, which has to be documented. (Important because the brahmins who were considered conservative at time, Rukmini broke the mould and she married a person from another religion, revived sadir which was despised then).

So, I think mentioning caste names in the introduction can be avoided and hope u can appreciate my reasoning.

Sometimes, not only history but also the way it is written should be corrected.

I agree with you on the way we introduce the personality. We'll stick to those. And I share your feelings regarding the ill-effects of cateism. I'm sure Santhosh does too. But, I somehow feel that history can't be and shouldn't be rewritten. If "U.Ve.Saminatha Aiyar" was widely known so, let the article reflect that. Let us think it over again. -- Sundar 06:19, 24 ஜூன் 2005 (UTC)
Ravi . I agree as well as disagree with some of your points. Agree with the ill-effects and the evils of the casteism. But disagree with the way to rewrite or enforce our convictions in history. Facts should never be censored in the history. Will write a detailed reply to you later - Santhoshguru 07:37, 24 ஜூன் 2005 (UTC)

I just want to reiterate my opinion that those great people will even be recognised without their caste based surnames and "by registering such caste based surnames and also tagging which caste was higher and lower" we are passing the ill feelings that prevailed in those times to the coming generations too which is unnecessary. If needed we can mention in the article that they were popularly known as u.v.saaminaatha ayer ( just like we mention m.karunanithi was popularly known as kalaignar), instead of including the ayer in the article topic. I hope that by doing this we will be setting good standards in writing and this will be neither censoring or rewriting history. It should be just thought as a new way of documenting. If we can document the present generation by their deeds (ex:sujatha (writer), sujatha (actress)) without any confusion then it can be done for the previous generation also. If it is considered barbaric now to add caste surnames , we should feel the same when we introduce our ancestors with casteist surnames.

The question is whether the way of documenting of names can be changed ? Who is the authority to change ? Who makes the rules of documenting ?

If cities like Madras, Bombay, Calcutta can change their 200 year old names we can also change our ancestors' names if it is for a noble cause.

If we can leave titles like sir, kalignar etc in the article topics, why cant we leave the caste base titles/surnames ? We are leaving just the title and not changing the name of personality! One should note that such caste based titles were symbols of caste based vanity and doesnt signify their accomplishments. By mentioning in between the article that they were popularly known with their caste based titles , we will neither be hiding facts nor censoring history.

But my opinion is that one should resist from using such caste based titles for internal linking in this site, article topics or to mention the personality's name in other articles

I understand that facts should not be censored in history. While I feel the discussion above is necessary to expand the MOS, I also realise that this discussion is beyond the scope of wikipedia and it needs to be discussed in a bigger forum of scholars over a period of time and can be a never ending discussion. I will wait for more opinions from regular editors here. At the same time, I also do not want to distract the efforts, time and attention of our editors here regarding this.

Thanks to sundar and santhosh for taking my reasoning in the right spirit.

@Ravidreams: "If cities like Madras, Bombay, Calcutta can change their 200 year old names ..." I disagree with this argument. The names Madras, Bombay, Calcutta were not the original names of those places. Those were names given by foreigners. What happened was the original names were restored. Therefore it does not come under the category "name change". As for writing the names of persons, I feel that the name of a person should be written the same way as he/she writes his/her name. No one has the right to change it. Dale Carnegie said "a man's name is to him, the most sweet-sounding language". If you are to implement certain polices regarding writing the names of persons in Tamil Wiki, then you also should adhere to the Grammar rules. ரவி should be written as இரவி only. I found elsewhere an argument whether to write ருக்மிணி or ருக்மணி. If anyone wants to keep the Tamil tradition then the name should be written as உருக்குமணி. To avoid all such controversies, my idea is that a person's name should be written the same way as that person writes his/her name.

In English also you find caste names as surnames, like Smith, Potter, Townsend etc. But many people here even do not know those are caste names. I had a friend in Nottingham whose surname is Townsend. When I asked him about the name, he said it is "Town's End". That means those people are not allowed to enter the town and had to live outside the town. Though he is a Professor, he said, his grand-father was not allowed to enter the town. If you read books written during the reign of Queen Victoria, you will find many caste names that prevailed in the English society. While "Britania ruled the waves" some of her own citizens were in the grip of poverty. In every town there were boundaries that cannot be trespassed by lower caste people. There is a saying in English "Beating the bounds" that was coined because fathers took their sons to the boundary and beat them so that they will remember the boundary.

Therefore, if you can write as Duncan Smith, what is wrong in writing U. Ve. Saminatha aiyar?
