in 1834 The Jaffna Central School started by Rev. Peter Pervival. He was then the General Superindendent of the Wesleyan Mission in the Northern and Eastern Perovinces, and Financial Secretary. A Boarding Institution divided into separate Departments for boys and girls was also established. This institution was intended for the benefit not only of youths of Jaffna but also of the children of parents residing in other parts of the island. Mr Percival had also under him two girls' English schools, six boys' Tamil Schools and two Girls' Tamil schoolsin Jaffna.
The Central College was originally and popularly known as the Vembadi Wesleyan School, on account of a number of big Margosa trees that stood in front. There was an English School in the time of Rev (Joseph) Roberts, predecessor of Rev. Peter Percival, who engaged Mr Brown Sinnathamby, as Head Master, and Messrs Meckenstry Kanagaratnam, Wyman Kathiravetpillai, Jonathan Crowther, John Koch an several others as ssistants.
