"உலகில் மிகப் பெரும்பான்மையான சமுதாயங்களில் பலதுணை மணமே வழக்கில் உள்ளதாகக் கூறப்படுகின்றது". Please elaborate the context, historicl timeline of the above sentence in the article. It gives a sense that even now polygamy is widespread everywhere. Better to cite sources too. or, correct me if i have misunderstood the sentence--ரவி 14:01, 25 மே 2006 (UTC)

Almost all of my reference sources say so. see this. பண்பாட்டு மானிடவியல் என்னும் தமிழ் நூலில், பக்தவச்சல பாரதி பின்வரும் புள்ளி விபரங்களை வேறு நூல்களிலிருந்து எடுத்துக்காட்டியுள்ளார். இதன்படி,

• மர்டாக் என்பவர் தொகுத்த தரவின்படி, 195 சமுதாயங்களில் பலதுணை மணமுறையும் 43 சமுதாயங்களில் ஒருதுணை மணமுறையும் காணப்படுகின்றன.

• இதே ஆய்வாளர் 1957 இல் தொகுத்த இன்னொரு நூலில், 565 சமுதாயங்களில் 24% மட்டுமே ஒருதுணை மணம் கைக்கொள்ளப்பட்டதாகக் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

• 1973 இல் வெளியிடப்பட்ட இன்னொரு நூல், எடுத்துக்கொள்ளப்பட்ட 854 சமுதாயங்களில் 16% சமுதாயங்களில் மட்டுமே ஒருதுணை மணம் பின்பற்றப்பட்டதாகக் கூறுகிறது.

glad to see some references. u can cite this in the article too. But i still feel that the validity of the statement is questionable. More than the number of communities investigated, the percentage of communities it represents in the world should be clearly known. also does it take into account illegal / illicit affairs or only socially accepted polygamy? Either this sentence shoud be modified or referenced properly. The word samuthaayam is misleading and confusing atleast for me. In many countries, polygamy is not legal, then how can one call it to be rampant?--ரவி 15:01, 25 மே 2006 (UTC)
