The reasons for tattoo in the case of Kayan women are threefold : firstly, as a mode of ornamentation; secondly, as a means for warding off and curing illnesses; and, thirdly, on account of the superstition that the tattoo marks act as phosphorescent torches for the use of the deceased's spirit when making its long and weary journey to the abode of departed spirits.
