மறைபொருள் நிலை (occult) என்பது "மறைந்திருக்கும் அறிவு" எனப்படும்.[1] இது இலத்தீன் சொல்லான occultus என்பதாகும், இது "ஒளிவு மறைவான, மறைவான, இரகசியம்" எனும் அர்த்தம் தரும். இது பொதுவான ஆங்கில மொழிப் பாவனையில் "இயல்பு கடந்த அறிவு" எனவும், "அளவிடக் கூடிய அறிவு" என்பதற்கு எதிர்மறையாகவும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.[2] இது பொதுவாக அறிவியற் சொல்லாக கருதப்படுகிறது. இச் சொல் சிலவேளைகளில் "சிலருக்கு மட்டுமான" அல்லது "மறைவான வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள" அறிவு எனக் கருதப்படுகின்றது. ஆனால் மறைபொருள் நிலையாளர்கள் உண்மைக் காரணங்களுக்கு அப்பால் பரந்துள்ள ஆழமான ஆன்மீக உண்மைத்தன்மையையும் பௌதீக அறிவியல்களையும் கற்பதில் ஈடுபடுகின்றார்கள்.[3]
