கேரள வாலாட்டி பாம்பு (Kerala shieldtail), தமிழகப் பகுதியான மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைத்தொடரில் அமைந்துள்ள ஆனை மலைக் காடுகளில் காணப்படும் ஒரு ஊர்வனகுடும்பத்தைச் சார்ந்த பாம்பு இனம் ஆகும். இது இந்தியா, இலங்கைக் காடுகளில் காணப்படும் கவச வால் பாம்பின் (shield-tailed snake) துணையினம் எனக் கூறப்பட்டாலும் தற்போதைய ஆராய்ச்சியின் படி, எந்த வகை என்று வகைப்படுத்தமுடியான இனமாக உள்ளது.[3]
வாழ்விடங்கள்[தொகு]
இந்திய நாட்டின் கேரள மாநிலத்தின் மேற்குத் தொடர்ச்சி மலைத்தொடரில் அமைந்துள்ள கோட்டைப் பாறை, ஆனை மலைப் பகுதிக்கு உட்பட்ட திருவிதாங்கூர், இடுக்கு மாவட்டத்திற்கு உட்பட்ட முதிரைப்புழி ஆற்றின் (Muthirapuzha River) படுகையில் இருக்கும் கிராமமான குஞ்சுதானி (Kunchithanny) முதல் திருவனந்தபுரம் வரையிலும் அமைந்துள்ள வட்டாரங்களிலும் கானப்படுகிறது. மேலும் இவை இலங்கையில் பல இடங்களிலும் காணப்படுகின்றன.[2]

இதன் முதுகுப்பகுதி பழுப்பிலோ கரும்பழுப்பு நிறத்திலோ, புள்ளிகளுடனும், கோடுகளுடனும் காணப்படுகிறது. இவற்றின் கீழ்ப் பகுதி மஞ்சளிலும் அடர் பழுப்பு நிறத்திலும் காணப்படுகிறது. இவற்றில் பருவம்வந்த பாம்புகள் 45 செ. மீற்றர்கள் நீளம் வரை இருக்கும். இவற்றிற்கு பின்புற செதில்கள் (Dorsal scales) உடம்பின் நடுப்பகுதியிலிருந்து 17 கோடுகள் காணப்படுகின்றன. மேலும் தளைக்குமேல் இரண்டு கோடுகள் காணப்படுகின்றன. பின்புற செதில்கள் (Ventral scales) வால் பகுதியில் 126 முதல் 146 கோடுகளும், வளரும் செதில்கள் (Subcaudal scales) 8 முதல் 12 வரையும் காணப்படுகின்றன.
