ஆய்வு பல்கலைக்கழகம் அல்லது ஆய்வு-முனைப்பு பல்கலைக்கழகம் என்பது தனது முதன்மைக் குறிக்கோளாக ஆய்வுகளை மேற்கொள்ளும் ஓர் பல்கலைக்கழகம் ஆகும். ஆய்வு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் கல்விசார் ஆய்வே அடிப்படைத் தளமாக விளங்குகின்றது. இது மூன்றாம் நிலைக்கல்வி வகையிலான கல்வி நிறுவனமாகும்.[2][3][4][5] இங்கு தொழில்சார் கல்விக்கு முன்னுரிமை அளிக்கப்படுவதில்லை. ஆய்வுப் பல்கலைக்கழகங்களில் வழங்கப்படும் பட்டப் படிப்புகளில் பொதுத்தன்மை கொண்ட அடிப்படைக் கல்வி மட்டுமே வழங்கப்படுகின்றது; குறிப்பிட்ட துறைகளில் வல்லுநராக்குகின்ற வகையில் அவை வகுக்கப்படுவதில்லை. இருப்பினும் உய்யச் சிந்தனை போன்ற அடிப்படையான வாழ்க்கைத் திறன்களை வளர்த்தெடுப்பதால் பணியாளர்களைத் தேடும் பல நிறுவனங்கள் ஆய்வு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களின் பட்டங்களை மிகவும் மதிக்கின்றன.[6] உலகளவில், ஆய்வு பல்கலைக்கழகங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் பொதுத்துறை பல்கலைக்கழகங்களாகவே உள்ளன. இருப்பினும் ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்கா, யப்பான் போன்ற சில நாடுகளில் புகழ்பெற்ற தனியார் ஆய்வு பல்கலைக்கழகங்களும் உள்ளன.[2]
