ஒரு நகரத்தை உருவாக்குவதற்கு ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் அவை மிக முக்கியமான மூன்று வரையறைகளைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறது. எல்லா நகரங்களும் இந்த பட்டியலில் இடம்பெறாது. நகரத்தின் சரியான வரையறையைப் பயன்படுத்தி மக்கள்தொகையின் அடிப்படையிலும் உள்ளூர் அரசாங்க நிர்வாக எல்லைகளின் கீழ் உள்ள பகுதி குறிப்பாக சீனாவின் சோங்கிங் பெருநகர வரையறையைப் பயன்படுத்தி மக்கள்தொகையின் அடிப்படையில் பெரிய நகரம் ஆகும். சப்பானின் தோக்கியோ நகர்ப்புற பகுதி வரையறையைப் பயன்படுத்தி மக்கள்தொகையின் மிகப்பெரிய நகரம் தோக்கியோ இது ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட மக்கள் அடர்த்தி கொண்ட ஒரு தொடர்ச்சியான பகுதியைக் கொண்டதாகும்.

தோக்கியோ உலகின் மிகப்பெரிய நகரமாகக் கருதப்படுகிறது, அதன் நகரமயமாக்கல் அதன் நகர வரம்பை மீறியது.

பொதுவான நகர வரையறைகள்[தொகு]

ஒரு நகரத்தை அதன் நிர்வாக எல்லைகளால் வரையறுக்கலாம் ஐக்கிய நாடுகளின் சிறுவர் நிதியம் (UNICEF)[1] "ஒரு நகர நிர்வாக எல்லைக்குள் வாழும் மக்கள் அல்லது நகரத்திலிருந்து நேரடியாக ஒரு அதிகாரத்தால் கட்டுப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது." ஒரு நகர முறையானது சட்டரீதியான அல்லது அரசியல் எல்லைகளின்படி வரையறுக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு பகுதி மற்றும் நிர்வாக ரீதியாக அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட்ட நகர்ப்புற நிலை, இது பொதுவாக சில வகையான உள்ளூர் அரசாங்கங்களால் வகைப்படுத்தப்படுகிறது. ஐக்கிய நாடுகளின் 2018 மதிப்பீடுகளின்படி 5,000,000 க்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் தொகை கொண்ட 81 நகரங்கள் உள்ளன. [4]
