Choosing a still pool sometwo fathoms in depth, he throws a stone into thewater a little ahead of the boat, in the expectationthat the fish will congregate about the spot as theydo when fruit falls from the trees on the banks.Then, as the boat approaches the spot he deftlyflings the net so that it falls spread out upon thesurface; its weighted edge then sinks rapidly to thebottom, enclosing any fish that may be beneath thenet. If only small fish are enclosed, the net istwisted as it is drawn up, the fish becoming entangledin its meshes, and in pockets formed about its lowerborder. If a large fish is enclosed, the steersmanwill dive overboard and seize the lower part of thenet so as to secure the fish. Or the boat is paddled to the foot of a smallrapid ; the fisherman springs out and runs to thehead of the rapid, and casts his net in the still waterimmediately above it where fish fre
